Brooklynite Martin Amis Returns to Holocaust Horrors in His Latest Book, The Zone of Interest

First Sighting... Across a Crowded Room

As I make my way up the steps, moving quickly past the two magnificent lions standing guard at the New York Public Library (NYPL), I'm only thinking, "I'm late! I'm late!" I glide through the revolving doors into the Library, but am halted by the security officers, ever vigilant in the Astor Hall foyer. As I wait in the queue, I see a large crowd gathered under the ornate Astor Hall arch. My anxiety rises. Is this where I'll find the book discussion with The Zone of Interest author Martin Amis? Everyone's standing! With security nodding my release, I work my way around the periphery of what looks like a four-row deep crush of people.

Then, as I try to politely nudge my way deeper into the layers, I suddenly catch sight of him: A thin, slight, silver-gray haired man perched on a stool, holding a microphone, listening intently to a woman, who is facing him. I glance back and find a sign: Books at Noon: Martin Amis, author, The Zone of Interest.

Second Sighting... Following the Crowd

Amis and NYPL host Jessica Strand's half-hour conversation is drawing to a close, confirming my late arrival. The crowd slowly parts, nearly half heading to the hallway for the book signing.

As I re-calibrate from anxiety to disappointment to a muted anger, I also keep my eye on the growing line, quickly moving into follow-the-crowd mode. We find Amis seated at a table and already graciously signing copies of "The Zone of Interest." I stand, just beyond his peripheral vision. Guilty.

Still, perhaps like a few of those many dozens of people waiting to touch his hand, voice their appreciation for his book, or simply hand over their book for signing, I'm also holding the trauma of The Zone of Interest.

The Zone of Interest, revisits the town of Auschwitz, more specifically The Zone of Interest, which contains one of the death camps and the headquarters and domiciles of its Nazi staffers and assistants, a "dumping ground for 2nd-rate blunderers," as its commandant wryly observes. 

As we approach the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the Holocaust, among all its other perverse distinctions, has become the most widely discussed genocide in history.... Now, in The Zone of Interest, Martin Amis spins out a love story between a midlevel Nazi functionary and the camp commandant's wife, with a member of the Sonderkommando — the prisoners charged with cleaning out the gas chambers and disposing of the bodies — as onlooker.

Martin Amis comes to Books at Noon to discuss his latest work, The Zone of Interest 

Martin Amis was born in Swansea, Wales, and educated at Exeter College, Oxford. He is the author of twelve previous novels, including The Rachel Papers, Money, London Fields and The Pregnant Widow. He is also the author of the memoir Experience, two collections of short stories and six books of non-fiction, including The Second Plane. He was literary editor of The New Statesman and served as the Professor of Creative Writing at the Centre for New Writing at the University of Manchester until 2011. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, the writer Isabel Fonseca, and their children.

Kickstarter Campaign to Produce Most Dangerous Man in America

Actor-activist Danny Glover, New Federal Theatre's Woodie King, Jr., and journalist/ author Herb Boyd were among the luminaries who helped announce the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to raise $40,000 for legendary poet, playwright and activist Amiri Baraka's final play, Most Dangerous Man in America, about W.E.B. DuBois. Following opening remarks made by Dr. Khalil Muhammad, Director, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, at a news conference held today, Glover offered homage, saying Baraka helped transform his life in the arts.

Glover, whose friendship with the acclaimed writer spanned nearly 50 years, noted, "I met Amiri Baraka for the first time in the Spring of 1967, when I was a 20-year-old student at San Francisco State. Amiri's on-campus presence was essential, and a catalyst for establishing the College of Ethnic Studies, which 45 years later is still the only one in the nation." Glover also said, "Amiri Baraka was the most dangerous man in America! Now, his son, Ras Baraka, is mayor of Newark. Amiri's legacy is that he imparted an understanding of the dialectics of history-making moments."

Scheduled for world premiere on May 28, 2015, Most Dangerous Man in America will be produced and directed by King.

"Our Kickstarter donors essentially are producers of a play conceived and written by a world-class theatre icon," said Woodie King Jr., Producer and Director, New Federal Theatre and producer of Amiri Baraka's plays since the 1960s. "They also are investors in both Baraka and DuBois' vibrant, rich legacies through a play depicting the triumph of the human spirit."

Former ABC News reporter Art McFarland will star as DuBois and Petronia Paley as Shirley Graham DuBois. Both actors made brief statements about their roles and the historic play, which dramatizes what many consider to be among the most traumatic events in America during the reign of McCarthyism.

A world-renowned scholar, historian, author, Pan-Africanist, and civil rights activist, DuBois, a founder of the NAACP and one of the most important civil rights leaders of the first half of the 20th Century, was indicted by the Justice Department/FBI for his peace activism and unrelenting protest against nuclear weapons. Although not convicted at his 1951 trial, the US government confiscated his passport and held it for eight years.

Comedy at First Sight

First, let me give you a word about how I came to comedy. A friend who's also a talented publicist introduced me to comedy and comedians by way of New York City clubs. My introduction to live, in-your-face comedy (aka standup) through Gordon Balkcom, opened up a whole new world – and way of seeing. So, when Gordon told me that an attorney who's also a comedy blogger had a new book, I was in! The book is Comedy Under Attack (ComedyBeat Books, 2013), by Carl Unegbu, whom I met at his book signing, held at Sisters Uptown Bookstore & Cultural Center.

Whenever I travel uptown to Sisters Uptown Bookstore, I find myself entering the warm embrace of an African village (or what I imagine is such). Sun-drenched even in the winter months, Sisters Uptown Bookstore's book-lined space is filled with books about and by authors from the Africa Diaspora, along with African art, drums, crafts, jewelry, large plush armchairs, and even a shrine for quiet contemplation.

The children's literature area has kid-size table and chairs, easy-to-reach books and rotating shelves with palm-size books and strands of colorful lanyards. Its café offers smoothies, muffins, tea, coffee, and cold drinks. I can settle into a comfy armchair with a book -- or, as I did on June 28th -- I can laugh my head off when comedians performed at Carl Unegbu's book signing!

Truth be told, Comedy Under Attack is no laughing matter. According to Unegbu, comedy is hurting, and he points to two major culprits: Political correctness (how corporate big business gets to decide what is and isn't "acceptable comedy") and joke-stealing, which he believes has dealt a mighty blow to standup comedy. To showcase the first culprit, he points to comic genius Dave Chappelle, who walked away from $50 million rather than serve corporate interests (more on Chappelle, below). Despite those headwinds, Unegbu believes this is the Golden Age of Comedy, and cites comedian Louis CK as leading the way for future generations of comedians in how to deal with corporate America.

The next time I see Carl Unegbu is five months later, on November 20th. He's introducing ComedyBeat's, Comedy Dialogue series, at Book Culture. The series tackles the latest issues confronting the comedy industry. We're treated to a spirited conversation with comedian/filmmaker Tom McCaffrey (producer of the upcoming movie, This is Comedy) and comedian/storyteller Rob Cantrell, maker of the new comedy music album, Dreams Never Die (you probably know him from Last Comic Standing and Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn), among others.

Book Culture is a perfect fit for comedy – or anything that's a little off-kilter and quirky. It's a stone's throw from Columbia University and just steps from the world's largest gothic cathedral, St. John The Divine. First Sighting: Toastmasters 2009 Annual Conference

As a former member of Toastmasters, I can recall being in the audience among hundreds of people who howled with laughter when then-single and footloose Brian Robinson took center stage at the Toastmasters Annual Conference in 2009, competing in the Humorous Contest. Robinson's tale of woe and disaster about how he tried to meet women on the New York City subway was, well, hilarious. And, I recall that when all the votes were tallied, he went on to win the Contest that year.

Now, five years later, Brian Robinson is partying at Bowlmor Lanes, the fun-loving way he chose to launch his book How to Meet Women on the Subway (2014). Yes, the book is about the author's woeful yet laugh-til-you-holler encounters with women on the subway. Robinson, now married, did not meet his lovely bride Angie on the subway. That doesn't mean, however, that he didn't learn the best strategies for meeting women. Indeed, he met hundreds of women that way, according to his book. To find out which of those excellent strategies for meeting women he used when it came time for him to marry that special someone, I guess you'll need to read his book (or ask Angie)!
